Menstruation Shouldn't Get in the Way of a Girl's EDUCATION

In many parts of Kenya and the world, a girl’s period marks a significant challenge. Instead of being a normal biological process, menstruation often leads to exclusion, shame, and disruptions in daily life. For many girls, the arrival of their period can mean missing school, skipping social activities, and feeling isolated.

The challenges are compounded by the lack of basic resources, such as functional, segregated toilets, inadequate menstrual hygiene education, and the limited availability of sanitary products. These obstacles make it difficult for girls to manage their menstruation with dignity, leading many to miss up to a week of school every month. Over time, this can cause them to fall behind in their education and eventually drop out.

In many schools, there are no dedicated facilities where girls can manage their periods privately, and without access to feminine hygiene products, staying in school during menstruation becomes nearly impossible. The result is an educational setback that girls in these regions struggle to overcome. For many, menstruation becomes a barrier to their future, rather than a natural part of growing up.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

At Us4Her, we believe in empowering girls to manage their menstruation with dignity, free from stigma and shame. We are committed to ensuring that every girl has access to menstrual kits and the education they need to navigate this vital part of their lives. Since our founding, we have distributed over 200,000 menstrual kits to schools and supported over 50 teen moms with mini scholarships, enabling them to return to school and continue their education.

Our vision is simple: A world where menstrual kits, education, and hygiene are accessible to all who menstruate, allowing them to thrive without the fear of missing out. We believe that if girls are given the opportunity to have voice, choice, and power in their lives, they will excel. It is crucial to create safe, open spaces where girls can learn about their bodies, make informed choices, and gain the confidence they need to navigate this part of their journey with pride.

By providing the support and resources necessary, we can help break the barriers that prevent girls from managing their periods with dignity, ensuring that they stay in school and continue to pursue their dreams. Let’s work together to make menstruation no longer a setback, but a step towards empowerment and education.

At Us4Her, we are committed to making this vision a reality, one girl at a time.
